Description:

On Fitness Complicit bring their signature approach ‘Keep Techno Sexy’ to Subspec with four nuanced, groove-driven tracks that trade on the melodic side of Techno. These tracks are perfect summer sounds… each echoing the ambiance of Midwest warehouse parties, open air terraces, and deep night grooves… oblique, considered, but insistent. Fitness sets the mode for the release with growing progression of layered harmonics. Bunky Prewster gets down and funky with a sultry vocal hook. Obsession creates an extended evolving space. Melt brings the original tracks to a close with a perfect denouement of dub stabs and bouncing bass. The release is rounded by two remixes. DJ M-TRAXXX delivers Bunky Prewster (DJ M-TRAXXX Latin Pitch Mix) as a tough beat, direct version of the original. Zyxt finds an oblique, Electro/IDM-hybrid influenced entrance for his reworking of Melt. Fitness delivers on atmosphere and grooves in equal measure and delivers compelling Techno with nuance and dynamic growth.

Description:

‘Spring Joint Coil’ finds JGarrett traveling on a direct dance floor trajectory. The title track “Spring Joint Coil” kicks off the release by introducing the foundations of the EP as big room Techno. The mode here is chunky, high-fibre, DJ-friendly beats and grooves… “Spring,” “Joint,” and “Coil” follow and explore different facets of Techno with a common approach. an insistent compulsion to motion. Spring is a growing and pulsing stomper. Joint brings atmosphere and melody into play. Coil turns up the noise and oblique percussion. The minimalist drum workout / DJ tool “Less” stops in before the original tracks end with ‘Elm & Trumbull’ injecting a little Detroit-influenced Techno soul before jumping into the remixes.

The release finishes off with 3 remixes of “Spring” by JAK (SubSensory), Tim Baker (Elephanthaus), and Symplx. Jay Zoney puts his spin on “Coil.”

JAK’s Drum Dub Remix strips “Spring” down to its fundamental groove and provides a thoroughly up-to-the-minute Techno journey. Tim Baker’s South Seventh Mix dirties things up into a call back to a place and time when warehouse grime provided the launchpad for space funk excursions. Symplx responds with a deep Acid take on “Spring” that nestles in between second wave Detroit Techno jack and classic Berlin stomp. Jay Zoney pulls Coil apart into new shapes and finds the space in between the thick beats of the original.

Reviews:

“Less and Coil (Original Mixes) are the ones that move me the most, solid release all around though, as usual!” – Aaron Nesbit

Description:

For “Love Life,” his first full length release, Jay Zoney brings the fire with eight brand new tracks of unabashed, tension-driven Techno. Jay’s signature peak hour style defines most of the release, but a laser focus on the tension and release in his tracks has been kicked up a notch on this release. This is no playing around, Jay Zoney scours these tracks until their fundamental grooves come shining through. ‘Beneath Main Street’ provides a cordial entry point to the album before ‘Hugo’ turns up the heat and sets the pace for the core of the release. “Love Life” closes out with remixes from acid legend Woody McBride, reinterpreting ‘Hugo’ into with solid, laidback funky dub, and Subspec’s JGarrett on ‘Limitless’ bringing effects-driven dub into the mix.

Description:

Subspec launches into a new year with a bold new compilation featuring various members of our extended family. Faces familiar and new deliver the grooves across 20 varied tracks that generally fit under the umbrella of Techno. This isn’t about a stylistically monotone single image for our label, but rather providing music that is both of the moment and aware of and honoring the roots we developed from. Most of the tracks are squarely aimed at groove-oriented dancefloor Techno with an experimental undercurrent from artists like The Automatic Message, Jerry Abstract, and Fabrics. RAFH & re_Click, John Massey, and Jay Zoney bring some peak hour fire. Complicit, Sone, JGarrett, and Rubidium provide the solid connective glue that helps tell a story within a set. We get dubby with Danzai, Cyanwave, and Milkplant; minimal with Terrence Dixon and Countered. Somatic Responses and Zyxt tip their hat to classic sounds of the early IDM scene. Kafka and Keef Baker’s OCDC glam things up on our way to close out with Raab Codec’s glitchy ambience.

“Specification” doesn’t represent a roadmap, but rather a vista populated by a variety of artists whose work we enjoy. It’s a moment in a transition and our report for the beginning of 2013!

Description:

Untilted 1,2,5 delivers three brand new, untitled tracks from Detroit’s Master of Repetition – Terrence Dixon which call back to his Utensil releases and Minimalism series. All three tracks delve deep into minimal spaces that he has developed since his early 90′s beginnings. Progression through repetition and close attention to nuance and detail underpin Untitled 1,2,5.

Decscription:

As a co-owner of From 0-1 Records Sone has built a solid reputation as a master of tension-building, slow-burning, deep Techno. ‘Pick Sides’ delivers a thick spread of that late night vibe in the vein that has made his name. The ‘Pick Sides’ single includes remixes from Terrence Dixon (Tresor / Metroplex), Complicit (JQM), and Dreek Sol (Audio Autopsy / Tekx). Complicit approach the track with a focus on the dancefloor outfitting the original with a couple new release valves. Dreek Sol explores dark margins of the original finding new spaces and vacuum-formed structures. Veteran Detroit minimalist Terrence Dixon closes the release with a stripped down take on the original that keeps the essence of the original while delivering the bare bones, uncompromising style he’s known for.

“Nice release! I really like Sone’s original, and Complicit’s UA mix. Terrence has a phat groove going, and Dreek has established an old school warehouse feel. This release will find rotation in my playlists!” – Jay Zoney

Decscription:

‘The 30th Floor’ rests on a foundation of propulsive percussion fused with heavy Dub influences. The title track The 30th Floor accelerates through a field of delayed chord stabs fueled by staccato percussion and insistent bass. Seven For Eight follows with a trackier approach with increased percussion. SandH Dub takes the EP to a more traditional Dub Techno area of multitap delays and rhythms underpinned with deep subs. Easy Play brings the EP to a close with heavy, tension-building changes as a distorted 909 floats on a thick atmospheric sea of drones and reverb.

Reviews:

“loving seven for eight!” – Drumcell

“30th Floor is elevated!” – Gr:uwe

“Subspec continues to deliver quality goods. Seven For Eight is everything I love about underground techno.” – Todd Gys

“Great tunes thanks” – DJ Summer

“yes! a fine EP from mr. garret. all goin in the bag!” – Brendon Moeller

“Full support, great ep all around!” – Dreek Sol

“Great stuff.” – Andrew Duke

“Great tracks here. The 30th Floor and Seven For Eight are dancfloor mashers.. I would say that Easy Play is my favourite though. Great intro track for when the room is full.. It has massive tension that will leave the crowd anxious for what comes next!” – Jay Zoney

“Nice release! Another cool balance of industrial and slightly glitchy with the large room feel. Especially loving the spacy-feel of SanH Dub with the deep rolling bass in the breakdown. Great sound all around!” – DJ Zach

“Yes! Now this is the JGarrett I’m a fan of. Every track is a bomb. The original of the 30th Floor gives me chills the way early 90′s techno of the same ilk does. Well done.” – Milkplant

“more textured jams from JGarrett. Always a good thing.” – M.Gervais

“Digging Seven for Eight…Thanks!” – Rubidium

Decscription:

John Massey brings his laser-focused, heavy-grooving Techno to the Subspec fold with the release of his ‘Patchwork’ EP. The EP features two original tracks and three remixes. The title track, Patchwork, builds up and then warps an insistent Techno groove. Cynical Memories take applies a similar aesthetic to coiled tension. These tracks are DJ-focused set builders in the best sense. Patchwork gets worked over by Sone and JGarrett. Sone’s mix is the razor-thin interface between stasis and movement, the sound of 4am frozen in time. JGarrett’s Asphalt mix takes the original on a dubby ride through classic Detroit party spots. The EP closes with Jay Zoney’s reworking of Cynical Memories where the ashes of yesterday’s parties hang thick in the air.

Decscription:

Life Jacker from your Jackers for Life at Subspec. We welcome Symplx into the family with the release of ‘Life Jacker,’ a brand new TechHouse EP from long-time Ontario master beat crafter Jason Justin. This EP is firmly rooted in classic Great Lakes Toronto/Detroit sensibilities and should have a home in the crate of any DJ looking to properly jack a party. ‘Work the Codec (Jason Justin Remix)’ is all about simple, deep grooves riding over shifting classic Roland TR-909 rhythms. JGarrett’s Dub inflected reinterpretation of ‘Work the Codec,’ retaining much of the flavor of the original while finding some new space to fit a smoother variety of jack in at a different angle. ‘Back 2 Dat’ eases some Acid into a similar restrained TechHouse approach, but turns the temperature up and lets things come to a rolling boil.

Subspec’s follow up to Jay Zoney’s ‘Near Future’ sees “The Meltdown” from that release put through the works by Keef Baker’s OCDC and JGarrett. JGarrett strips down Jay Zoney’s original to a slick minimalist vibe that whips up into an insistent acid frenzy. Keef Baker, of n5MD fame, debuts his new OCDC project buy teasing out intricate grooves amid the building fury of the original. A DJ tool version of JGarrett’s track is included which jettisons the acid lines in favor of the deep bass that underpins the track.

“The bassline in the JGarrett remix is killer, this will destroy some dance floors for sure!” – Cyanwave

“Awesome remixes guys! I love both of JGarrett’s mixes.. The JGarrett Remix is a classic acid journey, and the DJ Tool is great for mixing and looping. Keef’s mix is a different take in his unique style. Great job! These will all get played out!” – Jay Zoney
